keep the key

It took time, but I dug up that heart-choking chain.

It took time, but I dug up that heart-choking chain;
With all my strength, I ripped it from hardened earth,
Long buried beneath the compacted clay of pain.
With every guttural grip I tested each link’s worth;
Hand over hand I drew, by knee across torn terrain,
Until I pulled up hard on its posted bitterwood berth—
One herculean heave and shards fell like clanging rain.
