I write with words usually. However, I get lost in my music also (although it tends to be a much lengthier and more involved process). And, sometimes, music can communicate in a space uninhabitable by even the most wildly ambitious words:

Ah, you give me more credit than perhaps I am worthy. Trust me, I wake up most days feeling of no more and no less matter than everyone else I race to work in the mornings. I’m a West Texas boy whose Papaw taught him how to use a hammer and nail, with a job that trades me honest pay for 45-50 hours of honest work every week. But I do look for the silver edges in living. And, because I’ve sought it where it is and not necessarily where I might want it to be, I’ve probably found more of it than I deserve. In that, as well as in your kind compliments, I’m humbled, blessed and reminded that ‘average’ doesn’t require the connotation of ‘lowly’ or ‘uninspired’. I’m grateful for the time you’ve spent among my pages.

Simmone, I’m thrilled you’ve taken to writing! My oldest of three daughters is your age, and I encourage them to spend as much time as they’ll suffer within their own creativity. I was not much younger than you when I started journaling in earnest, playing with poetry and creating my own alternate universes on paper. Looking back now, I see how incredibly, almost accidentally, important that was to the strength of the ropes that now tie me to hope and the comfort of a daydream. Your imagination and a belief in the power of your own creativity can, and almost certainly will, carry you to places where your feet may one day feel too tired to go. Your feet will follow, trust me…

Your soundtrack calmed my being. I find melody is very relaxing, especially a good one. You have an amazing talent. I just seem not mindful of my words once melody comes to play. I guess some of us do better with just words. Keep up the good work.

A few months back, I included a short article to go along with the release of ‘Dublemma’ and your points are quite similar to the ones I then made as to why I enjoyed the genre of music my work most approximates: it won’t put me to sleep and it won’t make it impossible to think as I bend the mind to other things such as my writing. What did you record it with?

Thanks, Wyncliffe! I record and master everything with open-back reference headphones myself. And then I’ll reference again on a Denon AVR with Infiniti satellites. Still, most of my work by far is done on headphones, so my stuff is kinda geared toward cans. As for my tools, I use a bunch of stuff. I’m strictly a keyboardist, so every instrument I play is done on the keys or pads. The bulk of track work is done in either Abelton Live or Logic Pro, or sometimes both. I process on a Mac.
I just updated and finalized the ‘Tetelestai’ audio file tonight, so it may be worth a visit if you’ve enjoyed what you’ve heard so far. Thank you very much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!

I’m humbled that you would use such a grand word to describe this song and grateful that you spent some time here, Star. I empathize completely with the idea of going all in on a particular passion; there are stretches of time when it seems that a colossus could not tear me away from my music. Yet, believe it or not, there are also moments when that fire is simply resting in the ember, and words are the only thing by which my heart would care to keep warm. However, they do share the same spark in me, and I count myself truly blessed to have both of these creative passions as lifelong companions…they each have saved my life and will and hope and joy so very, very many times.

I do all I can to be religious and personal about addressing each and every comment, 365, but somehow this one got by me…for that, I am genuinely sorry. All of my music (and poetry, for that matter) has as its foundation an emotional bedrock, and almost always builds thereupon from a very personal and historical point of reference. I would hope every turn of tune conveys this. I lean on the belief that when I play/compose from that place in my heart, it will bear meaningful fruit for the listener, on whatever level they choose to meet it. Music is powerful, especially when it invokes our passions and imagination…

Thank you, Kevin. There is often far more to my music than is apparent on the surface (e.g., a mental picture that is inferred via the title or mood of the music in general or both). Granted, I realize that not everybody is going to appreciate the genre most of my stuff approximates; I do my best to remain variable and open-minded with regards to how I translate my inspiration into song. And while I often chase a particular concept or emotion in my compositions, I still would prefer for them to meet the listener where they are. I tend to think my song ‘Tetelestai’ might have some gravity for you personally…

Thank you, Archived. This one, in particular, was formed over the course of months…almost a year, in fact. I just kept coming back to it, little by little. Other songs, like Letting Go, began as one thing and ended up being something else, all within the span of 4 or 5 weeks or so (although the basis of it was something I wrote when I was teenager). In any case, fruit ripens in its own time…I appreciate you spending some of your valuable time here. Have a great week!

Thank you, December…you’re very kind. I’m no vocalist. I was a baritone, border-bass in choir when I was younger. I still am, but lack control. Hence, I have a major predisposition towards instrumentals. Much like my poetry…it has become important to me to open doors, not close them. You are proof that I can give what I want: freedom.
